How To Stay Productive When You Are Sick

Study Tips / Sunday, May 12th, 2019

You keep coughing and feel very lethargic. You just want to lay in bed and watch Netflix all day. However, you know that there is an important assignment to complete and a test that you need to revise for. You start to feel overwhelmed and just want to give up. But a small voice in you says to study as much as you can. You just need to find the momentum to start. If you have the common cold and your body is still well enough for you to study, here are a few tips to help you have a productive study day despite feeling sick.

Start Working As Early In The Day As You Can

As soon as you wake up, your energy level is the highest. Take advantage of it and complete the most difficult task first. As the day progresses, you may feel tired more easily and fatigue will probably set in earlier than usual.

If you canโ€™t seem to start your momentum to study, try setting a timer for just 20 minutes and concentrate on making some progress for a task. Take a short 5-minute break and repeat. Eventually, it will be easier to continue working even after the timer rings.

Take On One Task At A Time

No matter how many things you have on your to-do list, prioritise just 3 main tasks to complete for the day and do them one at a time. Avoid multitasking. This is to help you focus on the things that really matter, especially when your energy level is low. It also allows you to at least gain some progress for your work, instead of feeling too overwhelmed and not doing anything at all. Take plenty of breaks. For example, after every 30 minutes of work, take a 10-minute break. Working in short bursts will help you to recharge and not overwork yourself. Once you have completed your 3 tasks, you can rest guilt-free!

Do Not Be Too Hard On Yourself

Nothing is worse than beating yourself up for being sick. If you are already feeling so awful, hating yourself for being unproductive will not help you recover faster. If you did not manage to complete whatever you have assigned yourself to do today, allow yourself to rest early for the night. Schedule the tasks you need to complete the next day and plan sufficient breaks in between. Go to bed early to have enough sleep and energy to tackle the following dayโ€™s work.
